Hiking In Morocco - Intrepid Travel

The Brief:

Hike to the summit of Mount Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa, with the world’s best tour guide (Hamid Oumezdou, Intrepid Travel) and a camera crew in tow. We wanted to promote shoulder season tourism in the High Atlas Mountains, and attract visitors during the colder months.

The Challenge:

Mount Toubkal is no easy prospect. At 4,167 metres it requires a four day hike to the summit, in freezing conditions and dwindling oxygen. We had to carry everything in and out, including a number of heavy camera batteries that hate the cold. Simon and his small crew suffered altitude sickness and exhaustion, but we wanted to capture the warmth of the people he met along the way: tea shop owners, mountain porters, and berber Hamid Oumezdou.

The Results:

A video and print collaboration with Times Travel, which showed how slow-paced ecotourism is having a positive impact upon Berber communities in the mountains. Especially, how international tourism is helping young Moroccan women go on to higher education. We showcased important charities in the region and sensitively promoted the power of slow travel. This film was shortlisted by the BGTW in their 2024 “Broadcaster of the Year” category.
